Waterproofing

There are many different types of waterproofing and moisture barriers. A competent shower builder will always put a moisture barrier between the tile backing and the studs. Either auquabar, 60 minute builders paper, or plastic sheeting is sufficient. A waterproofing membrane is also required underneath the mortar bed of the shower pan This membrane needs to be much thicker and stronger than the one in the walls. Hot mop and Kerdi-roll are two of the most commonly used products. Hot mop is a layer of hot roofing tar smeared on top of a sheet of asphalt saturated felt and Kerdi-roll is a rubber sheet that is cut to fit, folded in the corners, and stapled to the studs and outside of the curb.
